What to consider before buying a bull bar
Few accessories combine functionality and aesthetic appeal, quite like bull bars.
The best Toyota Hilux bull bar for you will depend largely upon your needs- particularly the nature of the driving you will do and the level of protection you need.
Here are the factors you need to bear in mind:
Material
Most bull bars are manufactured in steel, aluminium or plastic.
If you do a lot of off-road driving, you'll need either an alloy or steel frame.
Steel bars offer the most protection but are also the heaviest- with implications for your suspension and tyres. But if you spend significant time over rough terrain or in areas where animal strikes are common, this can be a price worth paying.
Aluminium offers a good trade-off if the extra weight is a serious issue for you. While not as tough as steel, it's much stronger than the next best alternative- plastic- and weighs roughly half that of a steel bar.
This trade-off comes at a price, though, as it's usually the most expensive material.
Plastic is the cheapest and only really offers protection against the lightest debris. However, if you are a city driver buying mostly for those rough and ready aesthetics, they could be the call for you.
Accessories
As well as protection, bull bars serve as an excellent mounting point for your 4x4- everything from fog lights to antennas to winches can be attached (though you'll need to check with the manufacturer).
